The 10th anniversary edition of Zagreb Film Festival on Sunday opens with the feature film The Last Elvis, a story about an Argentine impersonator of Elvis Presley, a debut work by Armando Bo, the co-writer of Biutiful.
Together with Alejandro González Iñárritu and Nicolás Giacobone he was nominated for two Academy Awards in 2011, while The Last Elvis is Bo’s first feature narrative. He is the third generation in a family of filmmakers, working in the film and advertising industry since he was 17.
The film presents a metaphor of the lack of personality, denial and fanaticism, which the director considers to be the characteristics he notices among the today’s youth.
In this case, Carlos or Elvis has an enormous singing talent but lacks personality so he pretends to be the reincarnation of Elvis Presley, denying himself and the reality. However, he is at the age when Elvis died and the future seems gloomy to him. An unexpected situation will make Carlos take care of his daughter, which will enable him to find himself as a father and Lisa to accept him for what he is. However, fate poses an incredible challenge: on his road to music and madness, Carlos will have to choose between his dream of being Elvis and his family.
The Last Elvis is scheduled for Sunday, 14 October, at 8pm, Europa cinema, Monday, 15 October, and Sunday, 21 October at 5pm.
