Matteo Garrone thrilled the world of film in 2008 with his crime drama Gomorrah, in which he portrays the dark side of Naples and the brutality of Italian mafia. The film won over 20 awards, including the Cannes festival Grand Prix.

His new film Reality, screened in The Great Five programme, repeated the Cannes success and won another Grand Prix. This time the director decided to portray the Italian social reality and obsession with reality shows through the comedy genre. Reality is a tale of a Neapolitan fish seller who wants to get into the Italian version of Big Brother in order to catch his 15 minutes.

Luciano, the protagonist, manages to find his way to the audition and visits the film town on Cinecittà. There he presents himself and waits for the call impatiently. Him, his family and his friends are convinced the call will arrive and launch him into fame and wealth. Assuring himself that any day now he will get into the spotlight of attention, Luciano starts to adapt his life to the fame expecting him.

Reality is in fact a story of a man who slowly separates from reality and lives in an imaginary dimension. As the director explains, it is a modern version of Pinocchio, a modern and naive man who experiences a fantastic adventure. In order to describe the clash between dreams and realism, Garrone uses fairytale shots and atmosphere.

Reality is scheduled for Wednesday, 17 October at 7pm, Tuškanac cinema, Thursday, 18 October at 9pm at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Sunday, 21 October at 7pm, Tuškanac cinema.
