The Fifth Season – a story about the surreal connection between man and nature

The programme My Third Film, which presents latest films by authors whose first and second title were already screened at previous editions of Zagreb Film Festival, today shows the third film by the directorial team Jessica Woodworth and Peter Brosens, The Fifth Season.

Their previous film Khadak, presented at the fifth Zagreb Film Festival, earned Woodworth and Brosens the Lion of the Future. A bit over a month after the premiere in Venice, their latest work arrives at ZFF – the poetic film The Fifth Season. This unforgettable tale of three children fighting for meaning while the world around them is collapsing, displays humour, tragedy, beauty and horror, often in the same scene. The third film by these two former documentarians is a surrealist tale about nature conspiring against its greatest exploiter – the man!

The directors’ narrative speciality is a particular sense of space. In the mentioned Khadak they travelled across Mongolian steppes, in the film Altiplano they went to Peru to climb the Andes, while in this third collaboration Woodworth and Brosens returned to their native Belgium, to a picturesque village where something is definitely wrong. Spring refuses to come to this mountain village and the villagers take desperate and bizarre measures to save the land they live on, as well as their lives.

The Fifth Season is scheduled for Wednesday, 17 October, Tuškanac cinema at 9pm, and Thursday, 18 October, at the Museum of Conteporary Art at 7pm.
